Day two in Singapore brought a captivating blend of cultural heritage and futuristic marvels. My morning began with a strategic hostel change to the vibrant Chinatown district, setting the stage for a day of diverse explorations that culminated in the stunning light shows of Marina Bay.
Chinatown’s Charms & Hostel Discoveries
My decision to move hostels to Chinatown was driven by a special attraction I have for these culturally rich enclaves. After navigating the efficient Singapore metro, I arrived at my new accommodation, Bits Arts Hostel. Similar to my previous hostel, it offered a clean, arts-themed environment where shoes were removed at the entrance, fostering a sense of calm. The check-in process was delayed until 3 PM, but the staff was accommodating, allowing me to drop my bag and explore. The hostel even provided detailed maps and itineraries for local attractions and dining.
Chinatown itself was a visual delight, adorned with beautiful lanterns and exuding a charming, historical ambiance. The architecture, predominantly two-story buildings, gave the area a distinct character. After settling in, I connected with a fellow Bangladeshi traveler, a student from Beijing, and we discussed plans, including visiting the nearby Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Thian Hock Keng Temple.
Spiritual Serenity: Exploring Temples
My afternoon began with a visit to the Thian Hock Keng Temple, a beautiful Chinese temple dedicated to ancestors and kings. Photography was prohibited in certain areas, emphasizing the sacredness of the space. I observed devotees offering incense sticks and even found a wishing well where coins are thrown for charity. This spiritual experience was a poignant reminder of cultural practices I’d seen in Vietnam.
Next, I ventured to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. This impressive four-story structure, free to enter, offered a peaceful meditation space on the fourth floor and housed countless small Buddha statues, some numbered. A large fortune wheel, which everyone turned for good luck, added to the unique atmosphere. Downstairs, a museum showcased ancient artifacts, sculptures, and detailed historical information about the Buddha’s life and the temple’s origins. It was a beautiful and educational experience, though photography was restricted in some areas. The street market outside, teeming with food and souvenirs, offered a lively contrast to the temple’s tranquility.
Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands Spectacle
The evening was dedicated to Singapore’s modern wonders. Meeting up with my friend Tareq, we headed to Gardens by the Bay. We entered the South section, enjoying the incredible Supertree Grove. While we opted out of the paid attractions (like the OCBC Skyway or domes due to time and cost), the sheer scale and beauty of the gardens were captivating. The highlight of the evening was the Garden Rhapsody light and sound show, synchronized to music around the Supertrees. Luckily, we caught the Singapore Independence Day special, a visually stunning display that left everyone mesmerized.
After the show, we made our way towards Marina Bay Sands. Walking past the iconic “Crazy Rich Asians wedding hotel” with its ship-like structure atop three towers, we eventually reached the Merlion. The Merlion, with water spouting from its lion’s mouth, was a popular spot for photos. We even made a stop at the impressive Apple Store, a massive round structure seemingly floating on water.
As the night progressed, we enjoyed the magnificent light show from Marina Bay Sands, a truly beautiful spectacle that illuminated the skyline. The entire area was bustling with people, creating a lively atmosphere. Despite the late hour, the metro system was still efficient for my return to Chinatown.
Traveler’s Tip:
