After the initial urban immersion and the natural wonders of Puerto Princesa, my Philippine journey reached its peak with an exhilarating island hopping tour in El Nido. This region of Palawan is renowned for its breathtaking lagoons, pristine beaches, and vibrant marine life, and it certainly lived up to its reputation.
The Road to Paradise: Reaching Nacpan Beach
My travel to El Nido from Puerto Princesa was an experience in itself. While vans were available, I chose the more budget-friendly bus option, a longer but scenic journey. Upon arriving in El Nido, I headed towards my chosen accommodation, Mad Monkey Hostel, located directly on Nacpan Beach. The location, right next to the beach, offered a secluded and serene atmosphere, though it meant an extra cost for transport from the city center.
The hostel itself was a lively hub, with travelers from all over the world. It featured common areas for socializing, games, and even a tattoo parlor. The staff, including the incredibly helpful Hena and Leonard from Mad Monkey, provided excellent tour package information and made planning my island adventures seamless. The hostel’s advice on local transport, from tuk-tuks to vans, proved invaluable for navigating the area.
El Nido’s Iconic Tour A: Lagoons and Beaches
The main event in El Nido was the island hopping. I opted for Tour A, which promised visits to renowned spots like Big Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Payam Payam Beach, Shimizu Island, and Seven Commandos Beach. Our tour guide and dive instructor, Alvin, a Filipino native, was a fantastic host – knowledgeable, humorous, and a certified swimmer and diving instructor. He emphasized safety and provided clear instructions, even offering to be my personal photographer, capturing stunning shots throughout the day.
The boats used for island hopping were unique. Unlike typical engine-powered boats, these featured balancers on the sides to prevent sinking, making them feel safer and more beautiful. I was particularly amazed to learn that some boats operated on solar energy, a quiet and environmentally friendly approach to explore these pristine waters.
Kayaking Through Secret Lagoons
One of the most captivating experiences was kayaking. While I initially hesitated, Alvin encouraged me and even helped paddle, guiding me through the serene waters. The highlight was entering the Secret Lagoon, a hidden gem accessible only by swimming underwater through a small opening. The sheer beauty of the transparent water, revealing small fish and coral below, was mesmerizing. Though I missed bringing glasses for better underwater viewing (a small regret), the experience of exploring this hidden paradise was truly unforgettable. Alvin’s guidance and encouragement, especially as a non-swimmer, made this a brave and rewarding experience.
We also stopped at Shimizu Island for snorkeling, where I witnessed vibrant marine life and beautiful rock formations. The clear blue-green water and lush green trees created a picturesque setting, making it a “feast for the eyes.”
Beachfront Feasts & Farewell to the Islands
Lunch was served buffet-style on Payam Payam Beach. It was a delightful spread of pork, chicken, fruits, and vegetable rice, offering a taste of local Filipino cuisine. The simple yet satisfying meal enjoyed on the beach, surrounded by natural beauty, was a perfect mid-day break.
Our journey continued to Seven Commandos Beach, a lively spot with seven distinct rules (which I didn’t fully grasp, but added to its mystique). Here, people were playing volleyball, building sandcastles, and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. The sand here felt distinctly different underfoot, and the presence of freshwater bathrooms was a welcome convenience.
As the day concluded, we watched a beautiful sunset from Nacpan Beach, a fitting end to a day of incredible natural beauty. Reflecting on the tour, I was truly grateful for Alvin’s encouragement and the breathtaking sights. The entire island hopping experience felt like stepping into a movie scene.
Traveler’s Tip:
- Invest in a good waterproof bag for your valuables, especially if you plan on swimming or kayaking.
- Consider renting snorkeling glasses for better underwater visibility – it enhances the experience significantly.
- Engage with your tour guides; they are often a wealth of information about local history, culture, and hidden spots.
- Book tours like “Tour A” in advance, especially during peak season, to ensure availability.
- Don’t underestimate the physical demands of island hopping; bring comfortable clothing and stay hydrated.
El Nido’s island hopping was the pinnacle of my Philippine adventure, a series of unforgettable moments surrounded by nature’s unparalleled beauty. From the thrill of kayaking to the serenity of hidden lagoons, it was an experience that will stay with me forever.
